Nursing Care and Treatment of Patients
with Antipsychotic Medications.

Course Description:

This seminar is designed to educated licensed nurses indications and administration of antipsychotic medications. The examination of the etiology of disorders and common medical  indications for the use of antipsychotic medications will be provided. Review of the nursing process with teaching strategies for safe, medication compliance will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

Upon conclusion of the patient pain management seminar, the licensed nurse will be able to:

  1. List the various indications for antipsychotic medications.

  2. Differentiate the characteristics of antipsychotic medications in terms or mechanism of action, side effects, and adverse effects.

  3. Compare and contrast atypical versus typical antipsychotic medications.

  4. Identify pertinent areas of the mental status examination to be assessed by the nurse for patients prescribed antipsychotic medications.

  5. Discuss nursing implications for the use of antipsychotic medications in emergency situations.

  6. Articulate use and nursing responsibilities in special populations and the use of antipsychotic medications.

  7. Identify pertinent patient and family teaching information to facilitate antipsychotic medication compliance post discharge.

  8. Identify symptoms of antipsychotic medications noncompliance.
